Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil, also called the Vespers, includes some of the most divine a cappella music ever written. The texts include several Psalm settings as well as familiar hymns including Gloria in excelsis, Ave Maria, Magnificat, and Nunc dimittis. Our performance in 1997 was described in the Post as "sublime, lingering in the far reaches of the building like so many gorgeous sunsets." Rachmaninoff?s music is about beauty, "not for its own sake or for the aesthetic pleasure of those in attendance, but as a foretaste and sign of the Heavenly Kingdom." This promises to be a sublime experience.
